VTCT has launched a new learning resource for students undertaking the Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym).

The 100-page manual costs just £15 and covers the knowledge, understanding and skills within the Instructing Gym-based Exercise unit of the qualification. This new resource provides guidance and activities to reinforce learning and develop practical skills. AO Partner Active IQ: A brief history

ACTIVE IQ strapline

Active IQ was founded in 2003, having gained the status of a QCA Approved Awarding Body for the Health and Fitness Industry. In 2008 Suzy Gunn became the company’s Executive Director and in 2003 Active IQ became an official Awarding Organisation (AO).

Active IQ’s progress from humble beginnings to the company’s current status as one of the UK’s leading Ofqual approved AOs in less than ten years can be attributed to a rigorous adherence to clearly defined mission statement and values.

The company always aimed to be the industry’s AO of choice – prioritising five key attributes that have come to define the company’s business ethos:

Creativity: The commitment to applying new ideas and concepts to push the boundaries of education and innovation. Active IQ knows that the Active Leisure sector is dynamic by nature, and understands the importance of being able to develop new qualifications to suit emergent industry disciplines

Responsivity: The ability to react to suggestions and influences. Just as the company needs to be innovative, it also needs to be responsive and reactive to sector suggestions and influences

Professionalism: An enduring commitment toward conforming to and applying ethical standards to all of its work

Support: Proactively providing assistance with a positive and friendly attitude; never underestimating the value and productivity of optimism and advice.

Flexibility: A willingness to accommodate change to meet the needs of our customers.

Now in its eleventh year, the qualifications that the company design support clearly defined vocational and educational pathways. As a means to provide students with the best possible learning experience, the company strives to offer Training Providers the best possible structures and resources to deliver Active IQ qualifications.

Active IQ offer in excess of 100 accredited qualifications from QCF Levels 1-4, and Key Skills Levels 1-2, with over 550 approved training providers offering Active IQ qualifications both nationally and internationally.

Over the last few years, the ethos and experience has led the company into new areas. In addition to qualification provision for the active leisure sector, the company has begun to place greater emphasis upon vocational education across all sectors, in a bid to address the employment skills gap in the UK. Central to this was the launch of the Active IQ one-stop-shop apprenticeship solution, and a series of qualifications aimed at encouraging employers, and educators, to up-skill the next generation of workplace workers.

Of course, Active Leisure will continue to play a huge part in the company’s growth – something demonstrated by the roaring success of the inaugural Active Leisure Awards in 2013. The event, organised by Active IQ, was an opportunity for sector training providers to be part of a celebration of best practice within the industry and to get recognition for great work. Conceived as part of the 10th anniversary celebrations, the event will now be a regular event on the Active IQ calendar.

Brand NEW Level 4 Strength & Conditioning Qualification Coming Soon!

SkillsActive will soon be launching a qualification giving higher recognition to fitness professionals developing a career in the strength and conditioning industry.

The Technical Expert Group (TEG), a SkillsActive industry panel made up of academics, employers and Training Providers, have made the decision to launch a new Level 4 qualification in strength & conditioning. The decision was made in order to meet the growing demand for a higher recognition for those fitness professionals interested in developing their career within this area.

SkillsActive and the relevant industry stakeholders have been working together over the past year to produce National Occupational Standards (NOS) to reflect the requirements of working in this specialism as well as the job role required by employers. The NOS are currently being finalised and submitted for approval by Ofqual. We hope to have these ready for circulation come February 2014.

An additional Level 4 category is to be created on the REPs Framework. Unlike existing Level 4 categories which have a medical bias there will be not prerequisite of a Level 3 Exercise Referral qualification, but will be required to hold the Level 3 Personal Training qualification.

There will be two routes for Training Providers to get their training industry recognised:

1)      Via an Awarding Organisation (AO)
Contact your AO to find out if they are looking to create a Level 4 Strength and Conditioning qualification for you to deliver to fitness professionals.

2)      Via SkillsActive

Those Endorsed Training Providers who wish to gain industry recognition for the courses that are already endorsed under Continuing Professional Development (CPD) can apply to have the course approved at Level 4. However, this would mean a new full submission given that you must fully map to the Level 4 NOS which you would have not done previously.

Visit the SkillsActive website for additional information, further updates will be released soon.

2014 Makeover For Quality Training Portal

Keep your eyes open for some fantastic changes to the Quality Training Portal! SkillsActive is currently working on an exciting facelift and is investing significantly in upgrading the system to increase the visibility of Training Providers and the Endorsed Training they offer. This will increase traffic to the site with the aim of generating greater numbers of business referrals for our Endorsed Training Providers.

Since the Quality Training Portal superseded the old REPs portal in the summer of 2013, we have gathered feedback from a number of its users, both Register members and Endorsed Training Providers. As a result of this feedback we have upgraded the search functionality and made temporary changes to the front of the site. In coming months we will be working to improve the user journey, giving the system a fresh look and improving the Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).

We may need your help to populate and edit your own sections of the site, so watch out for our emails about the upgrade. We’ll let you know when you should expect to see a different system, but please bear with us while we implement these exciting changes.
