Policy Update: sanctions for non-compliance

We have taken a close look at the processes we are occasionally required to put in place where our Terms & Conditions or Code of Practice for Training Providers have been breached.  These episodes are few and far between but our processes need to be fit for purpose so we have put in place some additional measures to provide clarity and consistency.

Sanctions are only put in place as a last resort and after every effort has been made on our part to effect a satisfactory resolution.  Full details of our sanctions policy can be found here.

QTP tip of the month

This month we answer the question how do I calculate CPD points?

If you have Multiple Endorsement or QCF Verification Unlimited, you will be regularly adding new training and qualifications to the Quality Training Portal to attract new learners.  This means calculating the CPD points that you can offer, and often this may be a reason why your upload is rejected!

To ensure that you get the CPD value correct, we have made the information from the FAQs available on a dedicated page on the portal to make it easier to access – simply go to CPD Points Explained under the Training Providers tab.

We are sadly saying goodbye to Tad at the end of this month – he’s not going far, just across the room, but will now be working within workforce development for another team.

So we are looking for another dynamic individual with sales experience and ideally sector knowledge and a training and education background to take his place.  Come and work with us, we’re a friendly team with offices by the Thames, and we look forward to receiving your application!  Click here for full details.

SkillsActive announces updated National Occupational Standards for the Fitness sector

Employers from around the UK, supported by SkillsActive, have been working on a refresh of the National Occupational Standards for the fitness industry, which have been approved by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills and recently released.  To receive a copy of the new NOS, apply here. For full details of the contributors to the update, click here.

SkillsActive’s Professional Development Panel meets to discuss latest endorsement issues

Mandatory NOS for High Risk or High Intensity/Interval Training (HIT/HIIT) in Fitness

As already notified to our Endorsed Providers, training programmes that require competencies not covered in National Occupational Standards (NOS) or include elements of HIT/HIIT require stronger and consistent guidelines than regular programmes. This includes training involving equipment or aspects of the following that are not covered in the pre-requisite qualification: kettlebells, suspension training, ViPr, Powerbags, Bulgarian Bags and so on. Higher level practical teaching skills are also required.

Therefore a number of NOS have been selected to be mandatory to ensure that these areas are covered for endorsed Courses:

D454 Instruct and Supervise Gym-based Exercise (group) (teaching groups)

452.1 Prepare clients for gym-based group exercise;

452.2 Instruct gym-based group exercise;

452.3 Observe and supervise gym-based group exercise;

452.4 bring a gym-based group exercise session to an end.

D454 Instruct and Supervise Gym-based Exercise (delivering high intensity training);

452.2.4: Observe the clients during exercises and monitor intensity;

452.2.5: Ensure that clients carry out exercises in a safe and effective manner.

D461 Deliver Exercise and Physical Activity as part of a Personal Training Programme (utilitising specialist equipment)

461.3.8: Observe and analyse clients’ performance, providing positive reinforcement throughout;

461.3.9: Correct techniques at appropriate points;

461.3.10: Progress or regress exercises according to your clients’ performance.

Providers submitted an application in this area will be required to use our toolkits to show their mapping to these NOS, which are available here.

If you have a question about endorsement that you would like to put to the Professional Development Panel at their next meeting in April, contact endorsement@skillsactive.com.

New Opportunities: Market your training across our six professional registers

SkillsActive now has six professional registers across our footprint of sectors, all having Active Leisure, Learning and Well-being in common:

  • The Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs)
  • The Register of Aquatic Professionals (RAPs)
  • The Register of Playwork Professionals
  • The Register of Children’s Activity Professionals (Capre)
  • The Register of Beauty Professionals
  • The Register of Personal Development Practitioners in Sport (RPDPS)

Transferable skills are really important and in order to facilitate movement around our sectors, we are welcoming Endorsed Providers to promote any of their training across suitable registers*.

You can do this by reloading your training onto the Quality Training Portal, selecting each time the register you think your training is appropriate for.

Not only will it be of benefit to those register members to be able to tap into training across all our sectors, but it will open up new markets for our providers.

So if you think your fitness training is suitable for RPDPS or RAPs, or your playwork training is suitable for Capre, log into the QTP and upload it again now!

Do you hold a licence for endorsement? Not any more!

The Professional Development team recently canvassed a number of training providers to gain their views on the terminology we use to describe our Multiple Endorsement products, looking at the Training Provider Licence and our range of Fitness Course/Workshop and Other Licences.

The consensus was that the term licence conflicts with the way training providers use it within their own context, and they were all in favour of a change.

So from now on, for Multiple Endorsement providers within the fitness sector, the changes will be as follows:

  • Fitness Course Licence >> Multiple Course Endorsement
  • Fitness Workshop Licence >> Multiple Workshop Endorsement
  • Fitness Other Licence >> Multiple Other Endorsement.

For those outside the fitness sector – playwork, sport, outdoors, caravanning, hair and beauty – the changes are as follows:

  • Training Provider Licence >> Multiple Training Endorsement (ex Fitness)

Please note that it is only the titles that have changed – the terms and the process for Multiple Endorsement remain the same.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to get in contact with us on 0207 840 1900 or email endorsement@skillsactive.com

First Ascent partners with SkillsActive to deliver funded leadership programme

First Ascent, endorsed since 2014, was recently able to access a recent funding stream managed by SkillsActive because of their SkillsActive endorsed status.

We had a chat with them to find out more:

First Ascent was established in 1998, by two people who were experienced and passionate leaders. As we enter 2015, we now have three directors and nearly forty associates, supported by a central team of six. Our clients are globally distributed and cover many sectors, including sport.

Our core focus continues to be in helping people and teams to lead and manage effectively. We design and deliver bespoke programmes for each client.

In support of our expansion in recent years, we became ISO9001 approved. We are the exclusive UK distributor of Emergenetics Neuroscience Development Tools and an approved ILM Centre. We are corporate members of the Association for Coaching.

First Ascent began working with SkillsActive in 2014 when we were selected to provide the College Sport Makers Training & Development Programme. We provided two half-day Skill Development Workshops, focussed on marketing and strategy. This programme was endorsed in 2014 and provided us with an excellent opportunity to get to know SkillsActive. In partnership and working with Sport England, we provided an extremely valuable opportunity for delegates to improve their leadership skills.

Later in 2014, SkillsActive led a procurement activity seeking a partner to support the English Cricket Board (ECB). The ECB wished to provide a leadership programme to the County Cricket Boards, who would each nominate one or two attendees. We were delighted to be selected as the partner for the programme.

We are now designing the programme in detail and will shortly provide a sequence of Launch Events across England. Four modules will be provided, each focussing on a different aspect of Leadership. The programme will include the provision of personal leadership profile for each delegate, based upon the latest neuroscience. Each delegate will have the option to achieve a Level 3 or Level 5 Leadership Qualification (via ILM) as part of the programme, with tutorial and assignment support.

In addition to our work with SkillsActive, we work closely with Sport England and UK Sport, as well as the County Sports Partnership and the Sport and Recreation Alliance. As a partner to all of these organisations, we feel able to provide integrative programmes that ultimately develop people working in the sector to perform to their best and deliver to their respective clients.

David Sales, one of the Directors at First Ascent commented “We really value our relationship with SkillsActive, as the team always provide straightforward advice and support, with a true focus on serving their clients. This matches our ethic of being easy to deal with and focussing on measurable outcomes from everything we do.”

First Ascent is not only leading the field of leadership training through incorporation of the latest neuroscience, but also because it provides lifetime mentoring support to all delegates of its programmes. Delegates also gain access to the First Ascent Foundation, which provides workshops in which peers from all sectors come together to share experiences on different aspects of leadership.
