Thirteen proud Physical Training Instructors celebrated as they graduated from the Royal Air Force Basic Physical Training Instructor Course 86 (BTIC) that now includes SkillsActive endorsed Level 2 Certificate in Gym-based Exercise and Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training.
On 30th April, in a packed auditorium at RAF Cosford, Wolverhampton, where the training has been taking place over the past nine months, these qualified Physical Training Instructors were presented with their ‘stripes’ in front of family, friends, the School of PT staff and Air Commodore Warren ‘Bunny’ James (CBD MA CMgr FCMI RAF).
At the end of an uplifting ceremony, the Royal Air Force Physical Training Instructors (PTIs) gave a practical demonstration of their acquired physical training skills, showing how the training undertaken in the gym is transferred to active service. “It has been challenging and I am pleased and proud to reach the end goal” said graduate Corporal Harrison Reeve (RAF Physical Training Instructor). “Attaining a gym and Personal Training qualification will, I know, be of benefit to me.”
PTIs are pivotal in providing fitness and sports related activities for all on the unit. It is a multi-faceted role that can vary from implementing fitness testing strategies, delivering emergency survival training for aircrew personnel, and providing specific physical training to service men and women deployed on operations.
The addition of SkillsActive endorsed Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications complements and reinforces the latest developments in fitness and well-being standards giving RAF Physical Training Instructors an opportunity to promote a healthy lifestyle through fitness initiatives to a wider community. “Be proud of their achievements,” stated Squadron Leader Officer Trev Down (BA RAF), ”they have completed one of the most arduous courses conducted in the RAF”.
SkillsActive has welcomed the opportunity to work with RAF Cosford School of Physical Training. Tom Bell, Head of Professional Development at SkillsActive, commented, “Including level 2 and level 3 fitness industry qualifications into this RAF Instructor Training Course adds to the currency of the skill set of every graduate who, in turn, brings exemplary skills to the active learner, leisure and well-being sector.”
