UFIT Launch 2015

SkillsActive’s Rob Wilkie and Ian Taylor were at the launch event in Marseille in October of UFIT, a two year European Union funded project which has developed a training resource for instructors and managers of fitness facilities which allows them to make their fitness provision more inclusive and accessible.  Whilst this would primarily benefit individuals with disabilities, it would also benefit the older demographic or those with dementia.  The project was led by the Institute of Technology, in Tralee, Republic of Ireland, and SkillsActive was a key partner in the design and development of this important resource.

Leisure Industry Week 2015

The Health and Fitness Industry saw the first LIW this year run under Body Power (formerly UBM). The event had a great feel and it was encouraging seeing more fitness professionals attending.  The lecture theatres and live demonstrations were really interesting and well attended.  Over the duration of the conference, LIW managed to cover a multitude of disciplines in their Education Zone, all endorsed by SkillsActive to support REPs members.

We noticed a lot of newly endorsed providers attending.  However, some larger suppliers were missed.

After much thought and collated feedback from our members REPs decided not to hold their annual conference at LIW this year.  However, it meant that they were able to run more conventions up and down the country promoting the register and meeting members rather than hosting one or two large conferences.  Feedback seems to show that this is working well and engagement with our members has certainly increased.  REPs conventions offer to our endorsed training providers an opportunity to speak to and present/demonstrate the benefits of their training to REPs members, as well as providing the most up to date research for them to take away.  For more information on presenting at one of our events, please contact

Whilst at LIW we were fortunate to meet the following endorsed providers:

  • Physical Company – showcasing all their new and exciting equipment with supporting education
  • Keiser – promoting their new products and education
  • Jordan Fitness – showcasing exciting new products and supporting education
  • Clubbercise – spreading the word of exercising to music with a club feel and those all-important glow sticks! Endorsed education supports those who want to become an instructor too
  • Future Fit – promoting their portfolio of extensive training programmes as well as meeting with industry leaders
  • KBT Education – showcasing their up and coming endorsed training as well as the work they do with British Weightlifting.
  • Schwim – promoting their new products and education
  • Burlesquercise – showcasing their recently endorsed training, demonstrating how to use Burlesque to whip you into shape!

For those providers we didn’t get to meet we will be attending more conferences in the New Year so keep your eyes peeled for the next Newsletter.  Alternatively give us a call on 020 7840 1911 or drop us an email – we would love to hear from you and also support you in any way.

SkillsActive next year hopes to continue to support LIW and bring more offers and discounts to our endorsed training providers. Watch this space!

Is your Twitter feed displaying correctly?

We noticed some interesting variations of code added to the ‘back end’ of some QTP accounts, in the hope that they will magically transform into Twitter feeds on the live pages. Unfortunately lots of them aren’t!

What you are looking for is your Twitter widget number – this is a row of numbers something like 123541256321.

Anything else won’t work, or you will just get a link – which does work but doesn’t look as good as seeing the proper feed on your page.

So if your Twitter feed isn’t showing properly, give it another go using our guidelines.

Don’t forget you can also upload a YouTube video!

Training for the disabled

Inclusive Fitness Initiative has been collaborating with one of our endorsed providers looking at new, assessed CPD training aimed at fitness professionals working with the disabled. This is as a result of the removal of funding from this area, making it difficult for organisations to maintain the correctly qualified staff ratio. To support the sector, SkillsActive has removed the pre-requisite of a full disabled qualification as of 1 October 2015.

This will remain in place until funding is again available and the National Occupational Standards are reviewed.

Where will we be next?

LIWom yogafoodmatters

The Professional Development team aims to get to as many events as possible throughout the year in order to talk to training providers across all our sectors and meet up with our existing endorsed providers.

FitPro LIVE brings education to the front

fitpro live

Tom, Hanna, Jacqui and Stafford spent time at FitPro LIVE last month – its second year at the ExCel. Endorsed by SkillsActive, FitPro LIVE was an explosion of colour, music and movement, exposing us to new trends and old friends! It was great as always to catch up with some of our endorsed providers such as SOSA Dance, Burlexercise, Stretchworks, Xpert Pole, Group X Training to name but a few, and to be able to make new connections. Thanks to FitPro for making us so welcome, and you can read their synopsis of the event here:

FitPro LIVE returned to London’s ExCeL on 9 and 10 July, and celebrated its 25th birthday by doing what it does best – delivering world-class education.

Across the two days, FitPro LIVE showcased internationally renowned speakers, the latest in cutting-edge industry products, presented innovative masterclasses, and became the networking hub for 2,400 delegates, to help drive business forward and provide solutions in client retention. TRX, MYZONE™, Lifetime Training UK and Matrix Fitness sponsored FitPro LIVE, with TRX delivering expert coaching in functional training.

The FitPro trainer team presented Tribe Team Training for the first time, and the new MOSSA ViPR™ workout was officially launched. When it came to nutrition, Precision Nutrition’s Brian St. Pierre inspired delegates on ‘The Cost of Getting Lean’ and debunked myths as listeners entered the world of Paleo. Jenny Burrell proved a popular delegate choice as she spoke on postnatal fitness and the mid-life client, while Rodney Corn, co-founder of PTA Global, encouraged us to find our own movement style.

Movement training arrived in full force at FitPro LIVE with presenter Stephen Hughes-Landers turning conventional exercise on its head, while the Parkour Generations team invited delegates to unlock their physical and mental potential by enhancing their natural ability to move over terrain. More than 80 delegates took part in Stephen Hughes-Landers session ‘Master the Muscle Up’ and got hands-on with the most iconic calisthenics move. “It was great to see so many people wanting to find out more about calisthenics and how they could incorporate it into individual or group PT sessions,” Stephen explains. “Bodyweight training is perfect for the freelance PT, and with an understanding of how to teach exercises such as the Muscle Up, it’s possible to challenge clients of all fitness levels.”

Presenter Mike Fitch was back for a second year with his ‘Animal Flow’ session, commenting, “We’ve seen this shift towards skill development, where people want to learn how to move their bodies. To see it now so globally accepted and to see it have such a high presence here at FitPro LIVE is really extraordinary.”

The LIVE Zone offered delegates the opportunity to stay on top of their product offerings with IamRunBox showcasing its design solution, and Exercise, Movement & Dance encouraging delegates to get involved with its #NotsoSecretFlashmob.

Emily Williams, communications manager at Exercise, Movement & Dance, said, “Moving forwards, FitPro LIVE has helped us to establish our place within the fitness industry. We have refreshed our brand, and secured new membership and training.”

FitPro LIVE’s surprise delegate Dame Kelly Holmes attended sessions throughout the day and was seen putting Physical Company’s offerings through its paces. “I had a great visit to FitPro LIVE,” began the double Olympic champion. “It was interesting to see the mix of physical and educational workshops taking place. My charity, the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust, works closely with the fitness industry to provide opportunities for young people and retired athletes to gain experience for future work goals. It’s an industry that allows people to be inspired to improve their own fitness as well as motivating others to be the best they can be.”

Holmes visited the convention with FitPro blog writer, Ali Longmate, who commented, “As a British fit pro working in the Middle East, FitPro LIVE is a great way to make sure I can give my clients the best, most up-to-date workouts, tips and nutritional advice. A seriously good fun and invaluable weekend.”

Director of Group X Training Ltd, Jayne Nicholls, who is no stranger to the event, said, “They say you live and learn – I have attended FitPro LIVE for more than 20 years and every year I love the event. I am honoured to present with such a line-up and hope that my content inspires others in the same way that I am inspired right now.”

QTP Tips

Adding YouTube videos

Did you know you can add YouTube videos to your QTP pages? Make your training come to life using our simple instructions to embed your training or promotional videos.

Viewing the front and back ends of the QTP at the same time

Sometimes when working in the ‘back end’ of the QTP to upload some new information for approval, it’s useful to be able to see the ‘front end’ to view what is already appearing on the portal. If you’ve ever been in that situation you will have realised that this isn’t as simple as it sounds, and you in fact have have to log out to do this.

There is a way round it though – you just need to open the QTP in a different browser. So for instance, if you log into the QTP via Google, open the public view of the QTP in Internet Explorer. Then you will be able to view your public pages without having to log out.
